A third of the way through 2014 already! I have been remiss in not updating notes for quite some time, for which I apologise. Last year was, again, a busy and immensely enjoyable year of music and performance. One of my greatest delights is performing with Norwich Baroque and I am happy to say I did so again in 2013 in the programme A Virtual Tour of Baroque Britain with the engaging musicologist, Simon Heighes, providing the entertainingly informative live programme notes. We joined up again in January of this year for Water Works and I am looking forward to further performances with them in December and in 2015.
Another highlight ~ a concert of Venetian Song with tenor Andrés Hernández-Salazar and accompanist Lawrence Tao in the stunningly beautiful Marble Hall at Holkham. There are many occasions, and this was one of them, when I am so immensely grateful for the opportunities afforded me. There I stood in the Marble Hall singing the most sublime music. You see – it is not true that work and pleasure don’t mix!
In April I returned to St Michael’s Church in Aylsham for a recital with Jonathan Wortley for a programme of Britten, Mozart, Schubert, Fauré and Rossini. Jonathan and Alison Snape have for many years been the inspiration behind the Aylsham Concert Series. A great sadness this year was Alison’s sudden passing. For those of you who knew her, you will no doubt picture that open, smiling face. That is how I think of her and I am very grateful for all her kindnesses to me. As I write this, my mind is full with the music I shall be singing at Aylsham in just a week or so at her memorial service.
May 2013 saw a concert in Norwich with musician and Buddhist Minister, Peter Hayes. I find Peter’s music most uplifting and I very much enjoyed performing songs from our recording ‘One Thousand Beams of Light’. June and July were very busy with concerts at the Auden Theatre, Holt, How Hill House, near Ludham, Binham Priory and Salle church. For a change of mood, in August myself and The John Whitehead Trio took our show of Jazz standards to the Harbour Room, Blakeney. What a joy that was, and it came just before my trip to (wait for it!) Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. So, yes, I did include an Elvis number.
Producing these updates is most enjoyable because it gives me full license to take time and reflect on all that has gone on in the past year or so. I am eagerly anticipating the concerts and projects booked ahead and hope to see as many of you as are able to get along to the concerts.
